‘Hymn for Jim’ is a tribute to one of the composer’s – saxophonist Robin Porter – early music mentors. It is a ballad in three-time, centred around a moving melody performed with an intimate quality. Jack Gillen on guitar provides simple harmony free from superfluities, and Matt Parkinson’s brush work on the kit creates a warm wholeness to the texture.

The piece naturally grows through the head, saxophone, and guitar solos, punctuated sensitively at points by ensemble breaks and hits. There’s a real sense of listening and responding in real-time within the ensemble, but simultaneously a clear direction towards the joyful release when the melody returns. The piece concludes with a repetition of the final chorus, musically embellished by the drums and brought to a close with the tasteful use of effects pedals from guitar and saxophone.

This final single release (from the upcoming album) demonstrates yet another facet of the band’s style. The members not only possess virtuosic abilities to perform challenging repertoire with ease, but also display genuine modesty when it is called for by the music. ‘Hymn for Jim’ transcends the instrumental Jazz genre – whilst fans of Bill Frisell and Julian Lage will find some stylistic parallels, listeners to singer-songwriters and spiritual music will engage with the lyrical quality and sentiment.
