‘R-Evolve’ - composed by the band’s saxophonist Robin Porter – opens with a simple melodic phrase, which develops poetically throughout the first section. Jack Gillen on guitar provides colourful harmonic accompaniment with unexpected yet satisfying resolutions, and understated fills orchestrated by drummer Matt Parkinson provide a warm wholeness to the texture. The trio skilfully weave their way through this challenging section with interaction (as always) being at the heart of their performance.

A sudden line breaks the texture and a second part erupts. A relentless saxophone riff accompanies a fiery guitar solo, and further interplay from the drums contributes to an impressive build in energy.

The piece concludes with a drum solo, engaging to listeners who appreciate the complexity of playing in 5/4 time, and sonically satisfying to everyone else owing to saxophone and guitar effects creating ample depth to the ensemble sound.

This second single release from Aspyrian has profundity on every level – the balance of repetition/contrast that can be heard broadly between sections is also present between each phrase and interval. ‘R-Evolve’ is another example of the bands individual approach to the Contemporary European Jazz sound – fans of Kenny Wheeler, Stan Sulzmann, Nikki Iles and Pete Churchill will connect to the harmonic sensibilities of the first section, and for those looking for more grit and intensity with groove will find engagement in the second.
